George Tiller gunned down
George Tiller, a medical doctor who made a career out of slaughtering children in the womb, thought he was going to church this morning. Nope. He went directly to God, gunned down like a rabid animal in a church lobby.

Tiller's murder is of course a crime. But let's remember his victims today, who finally got to confront him.

And let's remember that we can't go around shooting abortionists. In Paul's words, "Repay no man evil for evil, but do what is right in the sight of all. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

The problem is that the person who shot him might have been preventing future murders. You're going to find very few biblical passages which support standing by while an innocent person is murdered.

I've thought a lot about that -- whether force is justified. I came up with a satisfactory answer many years ago answering, no, it isn't. But I forgot what my reasoning was. There were two arguments. One was similar to Lincoln's -- the civil order is worth preserving even if it's unjust. The second one has to do with private conscience and what you're allowed to do ... but I forgot my argument.
