Temporarily out of service
I hope. Well, my new computer died. Crashed about 30 times today. I kept restarting, doing diagnostics, reading the logs, defragging, simplifying, doing everything my meager PC-troubleshooting skills could handle. But I've failed. I restarted one too many times, and now I can't even get to Windows. Not the blue screen of death, but pretty damned close.
Now I'm working on a backup computer. I needed to clean this one up, anyway. Fortunately, I've got the wireless keyboard and mouse set up on this one, so it was really simple to re-set-up. Took less than five minutes.
The problem on the other computer: I think the problem may be the NIC card, the graphics card, or something else. There are repeated TCP/IP failures in the logs blaming the NIC card (it also said it could be a couple of others things that I've forgotten). But I'm not sure why it would crash while I'm searching the computer when not connected to the Net. It seems to crash randomly. Could be a loose wire. In any case, I'll address it when I can.
Alas, new computer, we hardly knew thee!

Fix in my case was, once we got past Easter, I got online via a backup computer, and ordered a new laptop. Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T61 arrived here within a few days. I've been having fun with it, tinkering with it, plotting to inflict Linux on it just like I did on my previous ThinkPad, etc.
At any rate, I hope your new computer is fixed soon...
In my case, once I got the backup computer going, the maddening part went away. The new computer was more of a luxury purchase than anything. I'll get it squared away eventually. It's not really a warranty situation here ...
