Bill's Notes

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last ...
“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation and that you move out of your comfort zone. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual – uninvolved, uninformed – you have to stay at the seat at the table of democracy with a man like Barack Obama not just on Tuesday but in a year from now, in four years from now, in eights years from now, you will have to be engaged.” — Michelle Obama.

Please tell me this quote is taken out of context. Or have we rooted for the demise of the Clintons, only to discover we've unleashed far worse monsters?

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight; somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
-- W.B. Yeats

I have never heard anything like this outside of a Third-World campaign. Are their names Obama, or Marcos?

Try Hitler. (I know, I just Godwined). But Jesus H. Christ, what is she thinking?

As it said in the Day-By-Day cartoon, that doesn't count as a Godwin.

Anyway, to paraphrase an old quote, I'm sure Michelle's speech sounded better in the original German.

Oh dear. Just when my Republican heart had been coming to the conclusion that (1) Obama is going to be not only the Democratic nominee, but also our next President; and (2) at least better Obama than Hillary.

Tell me, is there some way to drive an oak stake through the heart of "the politics of meaning"?

Somehow too Michelle Obama's words remind of a passage out of 1984:
The telescreen was giving forth an ear-splitting whistle which continued on the same note for thirty seconds. It was nought seven fifteen, getting-up time for office workers. Winston Smith wrenched his body out of bed... The Physical Jerks would begin in three minutes...

"Thirty to forty group!" yapped a piercing female voice. "Thirty to forty group! Take your places, please. Thirties to forties!"

Winston sprang to attention in front of the telescreen, upon which the image of a youngish woman, scrawny but muscular, dressed in tunic and gym shoes, had already appeared.

"Arms bending and stretching!" she rapped out. "Take your time, by me. One, two, three, four! Come on comrades, put a bit of life into it! One, two, three, four! One, two, three, four!..."

"Smith!" screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. "6079 Smith W! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me."
