Bill's Notes

[Bill, May 31, 2007]
Conservatives once again sold out
Dubya has sold us out yet again, this time on immigration. As I recall, Dubya's father did the same thing. No third Bush. The Dems may blow it, but I fear something worse: The Dems win like they did in 1976, producing the single worst president in U.S. history: Jimmy Carter. Perhaps the best hope is someone like a Joe Biden will pull out the Dem nomination -- a moderate Democrat with an eye on practicalities. Ugh!

PS: Don't get me wrong. I've been surprisingly happy for the past month. I'm just commenting on the political situation.

er... Biden? Really? I'm pretty sure even his mom endorsed Obama.

I pretty much agree with the post if you would only change it to read "the single worst Democratic President in U.S. history."

IMHO The Democrats were colossal idiots when calling for a time frame for withdrawal in the war spending bill. There was no way in the world they could uphold that position. They could have done some reasonable things to keep the heat on Bush, but instead they were playing to the base. I'd give their effort about a C- so far. I'd actually be tempted to rate their effort as a D+, but that doesn't give proper separation from the mind-bogglingly bad performance of the GOP controlled House and Senate.

I might go futher to say that the lack of leadership of quality in both parties is terrifying and I don't see that either party has a plan that will lead us out of this mess. The mess being defined as dealing with international terrorism (particularly in the form of Islamic radicalism and drug-related organized crime), runaway government (spending and ability to reach into private affairs and personal ownership), a slowing failing approach on energy/environment, a failed policy on immigration, and a breakdown in a common identity as Americans.

The only path I see to dealing with these requires getting all Americans to sacrifice and putting away the partisan political daggers. We've got serious problems, but no one seriously willing to admit them or face them.
