Bill's Notes

[Industrialblog, November 8, 2006]
Congratulations, Democrats
On winning the election and taking the House and perhaps the Senate.
Chris (mail) (www):
And let us all hope that they're not as bad as their campaign promises.

Oh, I forgot, all of these elections were clearly stolen.

And all of the house and senate democrats are all collectively Satan. Does anyone have a rabid bat handy? I'm not very good at foaming at the mouth.

Look, they have a slim majority -- this could be a useful "release" valve for the Dems. These guys needed to win. They were starting to get depressed. You can't have half the population on Paxil.

Besides, we'll get 'em in 08.

I'm vastly more worried about them causing us to turn tail and run like sniveling cowards from Iraq than anything else. That will in turn lead to an awful lot of bloodshed down the road.

But perhaps that's necessary. Maybe what's it's going to take is for us to be pushed far enough into a corner to make the world remember that Dresden and Nagasaki weren't very long ago. Perhaps the current conflict will only end when the muslim world sees what a real crusade looks like (after, presumably, an atomic smoking crater in NYC). But I hope not.

That's what I'm worried about. And the chain of events leading up to that can very easily be started in the next two years.

Anyhow, do you think that it's too early to start talking about how we need to get Nancy Pelosi removed from the house for lying to the American public, or should I wait until next week?

Chris -No need for a bat - you do just fine at foaming from the mouth all on your own.

When you abandon your core values, alienate your base and massively bungle a war effort and substitute canned catchphrases in place of any meaningful discussion of your policies - you get punished at the polls. This isn't the beginning of the End Times. This is how democracy is supposed to work.

Re: Iraq - we've had a dozen generals saying that the best thing for the war in Iraq is for Rumsfeld to resign.

Maybe this will precipitate that happening. Doubtful - but here's hoping.

Re: cutting and running -please see the current shameful situation in Afghanistan.

Mike,

We need to execute those generals for lying to amerikkka! Impeach Pelosi, she's trying to turn America into the soviet union! Support women, keep them in the house where they can't vote!

Dude, if you think that I foam at the mouth, you don't get out enough.

But I forgot, you're the idiot who thinks that scientists are infallible, right?

Sorry you took umbrage at the "foaming at the mouth" thing.

I was calling back to your earlier line - and I thought it was in good humor.

If I gave offense - I apologize as it was unintentional.

Rational people can and should disagree without descending to name-calling, Chris. It's one of the things (perhaps the only thing) that separates sane people from the tinfoil hat wearing mobs on either side of the aisle.

Mike,

I apologize for misunderstanding you. I live in a very liberal town (and married into a hardcore democrat family) and so I'm somewhat conditioned to assume that people who aren't conservatives think that conservatives are evil, stupid, and crazy. (And as near as I can tell, they really believe it, to the degree that they give it any thought.)

So I'm somewhat conditioned to being insulted, and since you didn't include any of the normal humor emoticons (":)", ";)", etc), I jumped to the conclusion that you were serious. I shouldn't have. Like me you have your faults, but you've generally been a nice guy, and I should have known better. I'm sorry.

You know, aside from body language, one of the things which really doesn't work well on the internet is context. I'm used to seeing bumper stickers calling for Bush to be impeached being normal, and I've walked by a demonstration where someone was standing on a box and screaming to a gathered crowd about how Bush is evil, no blood for oil, etc.

That's my frame of reference.

I gather that some of you guys actually live in fairly conservative places, which is your frame of reference.

I think that one of the worst difficulties for communication is different frames of reference; it means that all of the unspoken stuff we assume is understood, isn't.

It's cool, Chris. I'll remember to put in a smiley next time.
My girlfriend of 3 years is a hard right Republican. I can empathize with your situation.:)
