Bill's Notes

[Industrialblog, October 17, 2006]
Upcoming election
Looks like a sweeping victory for the Dems. Expect the Dems to pick up seven seats in the Senate, and enough for a small majority in the House. That means Speaker Pelosi.

Then the fun begins. Will the Dems impeach Bush and Cheney? Will they defund the Iraq War? Will they raise taxes? Will they go absolutely nuts from being out of power and spend like drunken sailors? Will conservatives be forcibly registered with the National Agency for Politically Correct Reality and placed in re-education camps?

I think if the Dems return to power that we admit the American experiment a failure, and return to colonial status under the United Kingdom. (Kidding, kidding.)

Seriously now: Whatever happens the second Tuesday after the first Monday in November, keep the faith.

Bill,

I understand you're a fan of the snarky hyperbole - -but given the last 45 days the GOP has had and everything that has come out/been confirmed beyond any doubt (lack of war planning, scandals, disrespect for core constituence), you guys don't have much room to snark.

And raising taxes right now -you know - it's not the worst thing that could happen.

Going deeper in debt to China and Japan (which has been the GOPs fiscal policy for the last 4 years) is a much worse option.

I don't see the Dems taking control of Congress - but I could be wrong.

In a way, if they did, it could be a very good thing for the GOP - or at least for true conservatives. A defeat here can serve as an escape valve for the discontent amongst the core GOP voters.

In two years, the memories of Foley and the bombshells from Woodward's book and David Kuo's book (and let me say "whoo-boy" about that one) will have faded and there will be 2 years worth of frustration at a Dem controlled Congress to fume about. Throw in a likely run by Hillary for Pres - and you've got a recipe for getting the GOP based fired up again and a likely return to dominance in both Houses and the executive branch again.

constituence=constituency in the above post

Something else to consider - The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran.

It should be there by the end of the month.

Yeah - it could be nothing. But it could also be the October Surprise that Rove has been promising.

Mike: One reason I'm not terribly upset about the prospects of the GOP losing are exactly your scenario. The Dems will come in, and that gives the GOP a better chance in 2008. The pendulum will swing back to the Dems. Better now than in 08.

But you never root for your own side to lose. So I hope the GOP pulls it out.

Don't lose faith. The American public may be silly in large numbers, and the GOP may have failed to deliver on its potential, but at the end of the day, I think that the polls will be shown to have been tilted (again), and that people will vote for the party that isn't desperately trying to find someone to surrender to.

Thanks. I know I'll vote. If I can find the polling place :)

I wish it was just as simple as

GOP= Stay the course! USA! USA!
DEM= Cut and run! Pass the bong!

Just one suggestion to consider, fellas.
Consider the chance that everyone who questions the current policy in Iraq isn't a traitor. Just consider that.

Also - not everyone who advocates leaving is a coward or unpatriotic.

As of a Feb 06 poll, 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, Here's the story

Yeah - I know, liberal media, leftist pollsters etc ad naseum.

But, maybe before branding everyone who questions the current policy as traitors or cowards, its worth asking if those number's aren't wrong - and maybe if those guys on the ground know something about the situation on the ground that's more a bit more complicated than "Stay the Course!"

Just something to consider....

and raising taxes isn't the worst thing?

Aaargh! The government already brings in plenty of revenues. Anything more will just encourage it.

Well - of course - spending without taxation really increases our taxes in the future by forcing us to service the debt. So failing to raise taxes or decrease spending is really screwing you over. So I'd rather have a little higher taxes and pay now rather than paying more later.

Unless, of course, I die young. Fortunately or unfortunately, only the good die young, so that can be ruled out.

I don't even know how you judge an economy that has $200B to $400B extra funnelled into it every year through deficit spending. Is it expanding naturally? What would happen if you took it away. Of course, what's more Democratic that "Guns and Butter." May be it is Presidents that come out of Texas that get into this whole run a war and don't pay for it thing.

So what if the Dems win? That means we get divided government again, which works a lot better than this one party shit. Bush gets a little oversight, and because it's now a Democratic Congress he might actually grow a pair and veto a spending bill.
