'Scare' 'Quotes'
You know here on Industrial Blog I like to expose various rhetorical techniques people use to confound and confuse their opponents. One technique that needs regular debunking is the use of scare quotes.

Back in grad school, scare quotes were frequently used by professors as a way of implying that anything within the quotes was open to question. It did occasionally force me to call into questions my own assumptions. But just as often it was used as a mechanism of control.

Me: I'd like to discuss "theory."
They: No, Bill. It's, 'I'd like to "discuss" theory.'
[Theory isn't opening to question, you see, but the possbility of discussion is.]

What started this: Steve Den Beste* has fun with the rhetorical technique of scare quotes by taking some prominent misusers to task.

* SDB's surname means "The Best" in Dutch.

Let's try this entry again. This time with scare quotes.

Oh come. Let's do this with a little more thorough skepticism. I can't believe how incredulous you're being. It's:

(If you look closely, you'll see that I even put the original scare quotes in scare quotes)

Incidentally, while this may be representative of too much time on my hands, it was achieved through

#! /usr/bin/perl -p
s/(?<!["'\w])('?)([\w']+)\b(?!["'])/$1"$2"/g;

And only a tiny bit of hand-editing afterwards. There are advantages to knowing how to program. :-)

Bill (mail) (www):
Perl sounds pretty cool. Of course you probably don't need to do that a lot.
5.16.2004 7:06am
Chris (mail) (www):
Do that a lot? No. But yes, perl is extremely cool. It makes all sorts of things extremely easy. For example, take the code which turns 3am into 3:00am in dates. Not easy to do, programmatically. In perl, it's
$date =~ s/(?<![:\.])(\d{1,2})\s*(am|pm)/$1:00 $2/;

where $date is the variable containing the date string to be parsed, before it is handed off to the library which actually parses the date (that's a huge library that someone else wrote, but for some reason it can't handle 3am, it requires it to be 3:00am).

If it's about text, perl is good at it. :-)

Chris (mail) (www):
Oh, those are called regular expressions, by the way. They're so completely unreadable in order to be dense. To explain what it says, loosely, read it as:

Apply the following expression to the text contained in $date: replace 1-2 digits which are not preceded by a colon and are followed by either am or pm, with or without a space inbetween with those digits followed by :00, a space, and then either am or pm depending on which it was originally. (incidentally, if you add i to the end, e.g. s/.../.../i;, which I just did in the code, it adds, "and don't care if it's AM or am or Am etc.).

Once you get good at regular expressions (and it takes a while), it's easier to read as a regular expression than as english, and it's definitely a hell of a lot more compact. :-)

"Good" post! ;)

Chris (mail) (www):
Josua,

No! That should have been,

"Good" "Post"! ;)

You can't fall into the trap of assuming that objective reality is as it blatantly obviously is! And just what is a "post", anyway? Are you sure that you're not using a definition loaded with meanings that don't actually describe what you see in front of you, but are being thrust on you by the [whoever it is who rules the world]-dominated heirarchy?

Joshua,

Incidentally, I hope that (1) it's clear that I wasn't at all serious and (2) that you'll forgive me for accidentally misspelling your name the first time.
