Bill's Notes

No
As I wrote back in January, any movie producers that would demonstrate the lack of judgment to cast Brad Pitt as Achilles have on their hands a doomed project. Salon agrees. (You may have to watch an ad first to read the article.)

Odysseus had an entire epic poem written about him by Homer, that is, along with Achilles and Aeneas, Odysseus is one of the great epic heroes. And yet here is what Odysseus (according to Tennyson) says about Achilles.

Come, my friends.
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

In other words, the honor was Odysseus'.

I don't know who could play Achilles these days. I'm open to suggestions. It would have to be a larger than life character.

Arnold a little old. And a little too German.

I was thinking the Rock for Hector.

I hear both Lee Majors and William Shatner are available pretty cheap these days.

I'd go with Ewan MacGregor. Don't laugh. Yes, he's a skinny shite, but if he could put on some muscle, he'd be perfect. Acting ability + gravitas. It'd also redeem him for his involvement as an accomplice in George Lucas's wholesale slaughter of my fond childhood memories of Star Wars.

K.C.,

Wholesale? What, are tickets cheap around you? I wasted like $20 on having my fond memories of Star Wars slaughtered before my grieving eyes. (well, OK, I just forgot about the new ones and kept on enjoying the old ones, but still...)

To me, wholesale implies some sort of discount, or at least general cheapness.
