Bill's Notes

More on the cabin ...
So this weekend I took another look at cabin designs ... we're at the drawing board now. Got a couple of designs worked out.

First piece of unexpected good news: Finally took a compass to my lot in the Poconos. Turns out that which I thought was NW was, in fact, due West. By turning the house a bit on the lot, I get W and SW exposure, plus a beautiful NW view. I thought I'd be fighting for sun. Now it looks like there's plenty.

Second piece of info is a little scary. I'm used to the anonymity of the city and the anonymity of the suburbs. Up in this little town I'm moving into ... not so. Rumors keep getting back to me. About me. It's really a good thing that I decided to do this work through the locals. Last thing I'd want is everyone talking about how they got shut out of this job.

MarcV:
Next thing you know they'll be asking what church you go to and if you'd like to visit their church! I guess it's too late to warn you about being careful what you wish for (cabin out in the mountains), but small town life does have its charms.

This will be a great opportunity for you to make new relationships. And hopefully they will be good ones.

What church do Pennsylvania Dutch folks go to? Lutheran?

Thanks for the good thoughts. Fortunately, there's plenty of space out there for us. Perhaps we'll be friends, and maybe we'll just shoot off guns together. Heh.

Don't think you would have some Amish to get "jiggy" with it in the Poconos, but maybe some Quakers or Mennonites, whatever is one step removed from the Amish. Just thinking about that shoo-fly pie gets me hungry: flour butter molasses (yum yum).

They don't quite seem so peaceful as Quakers!

In any case, there will be some real cross-cultural negotiations here. But it'll be a while before I'm up there.

Hmmm...so what are those crazy locals saying about you? I seem to recall that they once decided that a new resident was a State Policeman, apparently based on his haircut. I think he has since let his hair grow out in an effort to prove that he is really an engineer.

I don't recall seeing any places of worship out in your future neck of the woods, and I have no idea what the dominant religious denominations are out there - though with the large numbers of people moving into the area, I suppose any "local" religious identity will eventually be supplanted. I understand there's a cult of woodchuck-worshippers out there, and obviously more than a few Servants Of Mammon (judging from all the McMansions popping up), but I think the predominant form of worship involves the firing of semi-automatic weapons.

Hey, I didn't say they were crazy, you did. I recall the state cop thing, too. I wonder if they ever got straightened out.

The First Church of the Second Amendment has many members. I saw a few old-style Protestant churches -- I think a Congregationalist and a Lutheran. I may have seen an Episcopal Church, but you never know if you're getting the Silly Church of Gay and Gaia Worship or the actual church anointed by Christ to spread the Gospel.

The good news about my neighbors is from what I hear, the Pennsylvania Dutch like to be left alone, and like to leave folks alone. That's not gonna be a problem for me. Rumors, on the other hand ... hey, at least I'm being talked about.

I meant crazy in a good way, honest. I don't think you're going to see very many Pennsylvania Dutch, since the nearest enclaves are quite a ways away. Lancaster is a bit closer to Philadelphia than to the Poconos, so I guess you would be more likely to encounter a buggyful of Pennsylvania Dutch (who I think are generally Mennonites) down thataway. Up these parts, you're more likely to meet (and subsequently be eaten by) a bear. (Incidents of Mennonites eating newcomers are either rare or underreported.)

Bill:
yeah, but bears don't talk ...
