Thank you, President Bush
The most-maligned and most-slandered politician in recent U.S. history closes out his eight years of service this week. With his departure, the adults are out of power and the children are back in charge. That doesn't mean we're without hope -- the children, when tested with actual responsibility, could begin to grow up.
Dubya wasn't the greatest or the worst president we've ever had -- a fair-to-middling performance. Sometimes, he was very good. Other times, not so good. He had to work during a time when a hyper-partisan, deceptive and uncharitable spirit poisoned the souls of many of my fellow Americans. Dubya was given no credit for his successes and blamed for so many things that it became a joke. The criticisms were highly disproportionate to the offenses, and I think ultimately said more about the state of the soul of the speaker than Dubya, but such judgments are better left to God.
With the end of his term, Bush Derangement Syndrome ends, too, and the eight years of stunted emotional and spiritual growth of our friends on the left may end with it. That's a good thing. Hate is not a good thing, and some people managed to hate themselves to an early grave. Others have managed to fill themselves with such hatred and spewed such invective that they've upset the normal equanimity of the right and spawned an equally angry counter-movement.
So the end of the Bush presidency also gives many of us on the right a bit of a breather, as the leftists have to bother themselves with actual governing, instead of sniping from the sidelines.
It's important to remember, too, that as Paul said, we don't struggle against our fellow man, but against spiritual powers of wickedness. There's a lot of talk about the Judgment of History -- there's only one Judgment that matters, and that's the Judgment of God. Only God knows Dubya's soul. And yours. And mine. And at the end of days, there are only two kinds of people, and they ain't the Democrats and the Republicans.
In any case, thank you, President Bush, for your service, and for not returning hatred with hatred, lie with lie, and insult with insult. He's a good and decent man, and I wish him well.
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
